Mrs. Woronecki & Mrs. McOmber travel to Bal Kendra Learning Center in Kathmandu, Nepal under a Fund for Teachers Grant
Dear Friends, Please scroll down past the photo gallery to see updates from Nepal. We are hoping to post each night about our daily adventures in the video section!
Two teachers awarded Fund for Teachers grant to travel to Nepal.
Corinne McOmber and Terri Woronecki, two teachers from the Integrated Day Charter School (IDCS) in Norwich, will be traveling to Nepal to work with the staff and children of the Chandra Kala-Bal Kendra Learning Center for girls. Working closely with the Hands in Outreach organization they will observe efforts to improve the access and quality of education for girls in Nepal. Nepal has one of the highest illiteracy rates in the world for women. Corinne and Terri are including their students at IDCS in a service learning project with this grant. Their recent civil rights unit will extend the students' beyond Ruby Bridges' struggles for equality in education in the 1960s, to include issues that exist in the global community today. This fellowship relates directly to the learning needs of students as they begin to ask critical questions about the civil rights issues in the world today.
Fund for Teachers is an organization that "supports educator's efforts to develop skills, knowledge and confidence that impact student achievement. By trusting teachers to design unique fellowships, Fund for Teachers grants validate teachers' professionalism and leadership, as well. Since 2001, Fund for Teachers has invested $32 million in nearly 8,500 teachers, transforming grants into growth for teachers and their students."

Students at IDCS worked on cutting, ironing, and sewing fabric to make 150 eyeglass cases for glasses that were donated for the families in Nepal! Great work friends!
Students select and practice with instruments
Mrs. Woronecki helped our 2nd and 3rd grade students pick out instruments for us to bring to Nepal. Using guided discovery, we will work with the children at Chandra Bal-Kendra Learning Center. and introduce the instruments to them. We will also model lessons for teachers on how to use the instruments for lessons and transitions at a planned workshop.
